11. Let’s Talk About Sex - Salt-N-Pepa 1991
Let's talk about sex, baby
Let's talk about you and me
Let's talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Sex is one of the most perplexing issues that a woman will
encounter.
As young adults our fathers are devastated
at the thought of us having sex, while patting their sons on the back if they
get some. We’re expected to maintain a virginal appearance to society while
providing functional services for reproduction and male relief – though often
the same males that are devastated at the thought of their daughters having sex
dream of wild, unabandoned sex romps themselves.
Couple this with Liam Neeson’s
portrayal of Alfred Kinsey in the movie Kinsey, in which his character
gains critical acclaim for his 1948 research paper Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male, but is shunned for his 1953 follow
up Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female
because - I paraphrase here - ‘People don’t want to hear about their wives and
sisters having an orgasm.’
This is one of the biggest conundrums
a woman will face in society. Then society goes and throws in the further complicating
factors of contraception and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Despite great inroads, contraception
is still largely the responsibility of ‘Oh
my God! A woman!’. Yes, our sisters should be equipped with adequate information
and resources to take care of contraception for themselves because, ultimately,
if a baby is conceived, females face the greater responsibility – to keep the pregnancy
or not, and social, career and financial impacts of raising a child. We also
have greater exposure to and complications from STDs than males – again creating
greater obligation to take preventative measures.
However, then we have the
situation of the dedicated heterosexual couple. Despite the existence of a long-term
monogamous relationship, women still typically take on their fair share of responsibility
on this front. Sorry, but after my kid brother was born it was my mum going
through the highly invasive and typically irreversible procedure of having her
tubes tied, not my dad having a relatively simple and reversible vasectomy.
